Adapted from one of the tales in Pu Songling's Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, a collection of supernatural stories set in ancient China. It is also seen as a remake of Tsui Hark's 1987 film of the same title.

The story takes place in an ancient mountain village. There were spirits and tree monsters living on Black Mountain and these demons were always engaged in slaughter and bloodshed. The villagers all fear to enter the mountain and the Lan Ruo temple within the mountain.

When Yan Chi Xia was still young, he chose Black Mountain to practice and realize his dreams of becoming a good Demon Hunter. He experienced many dangerous battles with demons in Black Mountain. His sword became more fearful, and he gets more powerful and confident as he overcomes all the spirits and monsters until the day he met her and their sad story begins.

When Red Dragon is send out to retrieve a letter incriminating her master, as he plots to overthrow the emperor, she meets swordsman Yuen, who got to the letter before her. Red Dragon eventually falls in love with Yuen and turns on her master.

For those of you seeing the "Zatoichi" name in the title bar, thus assuming this is one of Shintaro Katsu's Blind Swordsman movies; Be advised that this is a Taiwanese imitation of the original. The original 26 film Zatoichi series, while predictable, was extremely entertaining and well done. Everything from the acting through the martial arts sequences had a sense of "high" quality. They were extremely popular and made a lot of money. Therefore the then fledgling Taiwanese movie Industry took a shot at making $ off the series. They staged a look-a-like contest and found their Chinese "Zatoichi' in the person of bartender Sing Lung. He made several Zatoichi films, this one (Also known as "The Blind Swordsman's Revenge) setting the stage for the rest.

In this movie the Zatoichi story is retold Chinese style. Zatoichi is returning to China from Japan, where he grew up and gained his incredible sword fighting skills. As a youth he was kidnapped after witnessing the death of his father at the hands of a homicidal sword fighter. He hasn't forgotten the past, and now he returns home hell bent on revenge.
